CASE STUDY

Ocean Cargo

Challenge: Improved on time delivery of Medical; devices requiring temperature-controlled Transportation. Importer was experiencing wasted time, increased port dwell time, driver waiting fees at the ports of discharge and delivery scheduling problems due to availability of gen sets.

This importer requires that the cargo remain at the port until it is completely FDA released for distribution despite having a US Customs conditional release.

Genset delay of availability:

  • Delays in availability of gensets (generator to provide power to reefer containers).
  • Delays in the scheduled deliveries to distribution centers.
  • Addition charges incurred due to container detention and port demurrage.
  • These charges were compounded due to the customer’s internal rule of not receiving the shipments until complete FDA release.

As soon as the US Customs and FDA releases the container it is necessary to have the container delivered with an underslung genset under temperature control.

CTL Solution: Obtain, set and review of a forecasting mechanism were put into place to plan, book and meet the vessel space, container and genset capacity requirements. Advanced reservations of gen set at the same time of booking at the oversea origins Close monitoring of vessel schedule and arrival times

Results: On-time delivery commitments with over 98.5% reliability Accessibility of shipment tracking information and data have allowed the shipment stakeholders to plan their schedules in advance, resulting in reduced delays Significant cost savings of container port detention and demurrage

Since these procedures were implemented, they have eliminated wasted time, port dwell time and detention and demurrage expenses. This has strengthened the custom’s overall supply chain dependability.
